After a successful 20 year association with Big Jon Downriggers I switched to a better and more modern downrigger.  Why did I change?  Because, I ordered parts in March 2000 and they were delivered in mid-August 2000, of course I refused the delivery.  Hey, the seasons almost over by then anyway!   Since new ownership has bought Big Jon Inc. from Jon Emory, I have terminated my long term association with them.  I have since been E-mailed several times and called by "a Jeff" from Big Jon Inc. and he has denied this ever happened, but I know better!

My thoughts on changing brands were long and hard, because I was used to the simplicity of the operation of my Big Jon Juniors, or as their now called the 2000 series.  Then I found out Mike Steffes, former director of research & design at Big Jon Inc. had started a new company called Fishlander.  They specialize in the manufacturing of quality fishing products only.

The truth is the Fishlander Downrigger is a completely redesigned and modern day rigger for the 2k's and beyond, curing many of the ills that plagued the BJ product.  The Juniors were designed in the late 70's and little has been done to improve it since.  Mainly, everything on the BJ 2000's have sharp corners, a unlit counter that needs constant resetting and a weak rear attachment lock bracket at the rear of the tip arms (long arms only, because of the increased leverage).  But, I've seen the remedied some of the ills of the sharp corners with the redesigned base in 2002.

Please bear with me on this, BJ still makes a quality rigger, but they just haven't been updated it much in the last 20 years.  The last major upgrade on the Juniors is when they went to 5/8" T7075 aluminum rod and a larger spool for better speed in the mid-80's.  With the absence of Big Jon Emory who "put his pride on the line," I doubt if there'll be much improvement in the management under the present owners.

The more that I use the F.L. Downrigger the more I like them, the swivel base at the bottom of the rod holder is an option once you've had it, you'll never want to be without.  I've been putting them thru their paces to last couple of weeks and the performance has been flawless!     4/24/01.......Capt. Fishlander Features

If you'd like to see a "hands on" demonstration of how the riggers perform and pick up some tips on installation, wiring and how to use them, stop by my dock in Manistee.  I'm behind Fisherman's Center across from the Burger King.  Call me at: (800) 552-2009 to set up a time and we can discuss the new Fishlander Downriggers in greater detail before you lay out the long green for a major purchase.

(1.)   A completely molded base for strength and durability with no sharp corners
(2.)   The cannon ball holder that is molded into the base.
(3.)   The counter is tilted toward you so you don't have to bend over to read it.
(4.)   A lighted counter for those of us who depend on the early and late  bite...especially August Kings!
(5.)   The mounting plate offers about 50% more weight distribution area over a square 4" x 4" base.
(6.)   The finish is Gorilla Powder Coat that won't fade like anodizing.
(7.)   A choice to  where mount the rod holders, in the front, or rear of the unit.
(8.)   Deeper knurling so the counter spring isn't as likely to slip and require constant attention.
(9.)   Stainless steel machined one piece, locking pins.
(10.)  Rod holders that not only tilt, but are always moveable at the base.
(11.)  A narrower spool to prevent line don't build up on one side on your out downs.
(12.)  Low 3 amp drain powerful motors that won't run your battery down like heavy draw units.
(13.)  At least 90 feet a minute with a 10 pound ball (conservative estimate because I get more).
(14.)  Beefy molded rear hinged locking bracket.
(15.)  A company dedicated to the par excellence in the fishing business.
(16.)  5 foot stainless steel one piece unbreakable arms for the out downs or long arms (special order).
(17.)  Reliable 4 button oilite slip clutch with a large knob to set tension.
(18.)  360 degree constant tru-trac end pulley.
(19.)  Because, I like the way they look and the smooth effortless performance.
(20.)  I trust Mike Steffes, because I known him for well over 10 years.
(21.)  The outdown riggers don't sway back from the trolling torque like Big Jons.

Most important of all: a soft, forgiving  arm that won't snap off cannonballs like rigid or stiff arm riggers and a lack of noticeable wire hum because of the sound deadening qualities of the suspension system.  Also, the softer arm will telegraph a strike long before the rod ever releases.......no brag, just fact!

Let's Make a Deal

It's no big secret the concerns about the economy are in everyone's mind now.  So let's face the fact's, here we have a new company starting up and they want to move product to recoup for the $500,000 in the design and manufacturing expense.  I have finalized the dealer price with Mike, and a Captains Choice which includes swivel base with 8 positions, mounting plate, 200' of 150 lb. test wire, dual rod holders with 17 positions, plus 9 angles and the above mentioned features will price out to the public at $539 per unit, priced comparable to BJ 2000 Captains Pack.  I consider the Fishlander to be an infinitely superior product and the best rigger on the market today.
