Safety First
Stay alert and have your crew members on lookout too.
If you do get tangled in a net, immediately cut all lines
and chalk this up to the price of staying alive!
3 sport fishermen in a 22' Starcraft Islander drowned after
getting
their trolling gear entangled in a net in the late 1990s in northern
Lk. Huron. Their boat filled with water over the stern, then capsized.
Here's an
email received from Capt. Dave Deforest from Enforcer Charters in
Manistee, MI. on the morning of 6/2/07. Capt. Dave is boat a charter
skipper and tribal law enforcement.
Morning Capt. John:
One last email before I leave. I thought I might clear up a few things. I know of no plan to have a processing plant in Manistee. The building they refer to behind Burger King is the old Oakgrove building that is owned or leased by the Tribe. Good Thunder motorcycles is in one half and the other half is used by the Tribal fishers to work in and store their equipment. They make more money selling the fish in the "round" than cleaned or filleted. They sell some fish to the people that bought out Ron Walters in Ludington. The majority of the fish are trucked to Chicago.
Here is a current list of boats operating out of
Manistee:
"Ida S" All white chub boat
"Shamrock" Small trap boat. It is really too small so they use it to run leads
"Sandy" Main trap boat
"Cierra" Large trap boat not in the water waiting for engines.
Ludington:
Tommy Battice's trap boat and I can't think of the name.
Art DeBrees will have a chub boat, but it's not here yet
Muskegon:
Jensen State License
Peterson State license
"Mercury" the green and white chub boat that used to be in Manistee
"Jennifer" Unknown what type of boat, I believe trap
Whitehall:
"Capt Bill" It used to be in Manistee. It is the one with the boom
I have a joint C.O.R.A. patrol the 13th and 14th from Grand Haven to Arcadia. This will include the GT band, LTBB, Bay Mills, Soo, MiDNR, and us. I should have every trap and chub net location after that. I know some have been moved and there are some new ones. It's hard to keep up when I'm gone. I'm getting quite frustrated not being one the water as much as I should......
Take care,
Dave
A Huge round of applause
should go out to Capt. Dave Deforest for this inside info. He's the
best thing we have working for all parties concerned. Dave is a
retired police detective from 30 years of service with the Cadillac
PD.
He's what I consider a tough, but fair cop, kinda like SGT. Joe Friday on
the old TV show "Dragnet" play by Jack Webb. Dragnet was
on the air from 1952 thru 1958 and revived again in 1967 and stayed on the
air thru 1970.
All the information on this page has been supplied by him.
